Now, the latest threat to free speech in guise of IP reform is a multilateral trade agreement currently being negotiated (in secret) by the Office of the United States Trade Representative («USTR»). That agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or «CTPP» would reportedly include dramatic changes to intellectual property laws, changes that could potentially permit the patenting to plants, animals, and medical procedures.
A leaked draft of the Internet chapter of the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) reveals that ISPs will be held liable for the infringements of their customers, unless they disconnect those accused. The draft aims to strengthen the power of the entertainment industries and other copyright holders, at the cost of the public.
