The Original Cancel Culture

I write about this program in my forthcoming book on identity politics, cancel culture, and academic freedom.  The Smothers Brothers broke the blacklist of Pete Seeger.  Here’s the song Seeger sang on the program.  I can still see that night in my mind’s eye:

Why Teachers Stop Teaching

Finkelstein comments:

A correspondent recently wrote me that, whereas it used to be that a typical teacher in his district had 20 years teaching experience, now it’s down to four years’ experience.  (He himself just left the teaching profession after a brief stint.)  I asked him what accounts for the quick exodus from teaching.  Here’s what he responded.

The root cause is economics without question. I can summarize the largest factors, but it will hardly capture the entire problem.

Wishing My Friends and Comrades, Here and Far Away, a Happy Holiday and Healthy New Year

There are three things I will miss when I pass:  Reading late at night until the wee hours of the morning; Fighting the good fight for a most just world; and Coney Island sunsets (the pictures are from today).

Red Joan

I recently came across a surprisingly excellent film titled “Red Joan” (you can find it on Netflix).  It’s about a female physicist at the end of World War 2 who smuggles atomic bomb secrets to the Soviet Union.  I dreaded watching the film because I figured it would be just more anti-Communist propaganda.  Was I ever surprised!  I don’t want to give away the story line so I’ll just say that one take-away from the film is that a legal verdict is not necessarily the last word.  It often must also be situated in a historical context.  That’s as true of “treason”
