Trump Creates a New Barrier to Solar Power

President Donald Trump made good on his “America First” promise last Monday by slapping a hefty 30 percent tariff on imported solar panels. Combined with a duty on imported washing machines, the move is the first of what could be many protectionist shifts in America’s global trade policies.

Government Shuts Down As Democrats Hold the Line on DACA

It’s no surprise that immigration would be the pivotal issue in US politics this year. Since last September, when President Donald Trump terminated Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) — the Obama-era program that protected undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children — the subject has dominated contentious discussions on short-term spending bills. On Friday night, the issue led to the shutdown of the government.

Codebreakers and Killers: CIA Covert Ops and the JFK Assassination

To those not acquainted with the multifaceted narrative of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the idea that US intelligence was somehow involved sounds like wild speculation — an alternative reality deserving of the pejorative label “conspiracy theory.”

On Halloween, Opposing Ideals Struggle for Dominance

The most important takeaway from a liberal arts education may be the ability to experience the world from someone else’s perspective. Walk in another’s shoes long enough, the logic goes, and you’ll grow into a wiser, more compassionate person.

Halloween seems like the ideal tradition for liberals: a time to shed their identities and pretend to be any cultural icon of their choosing, to transcend racial, gender and class boundaries and broaden their horizons — if only for a day.

What Is Neodymium And Why Is It so Important?

The average American consumer probably has never heard of neodymium. But that substance — along with other so-called rare earth elements — is essential to the functioning of technologies we take for granted on a daily basis.

Rare-earths refer to 17 naturally occurring chemical elements on the periodic table. Despite the name, they aren’t particularly rare, existing in relative abundance in the earth’s crust. Cerium, an oxidizing agent, is as plentiful as copper, while radioactive promethium is the least common.

The key to understanding the Trump-Russia entanglements requires going back long before the 2016 presidential campaign, and looking at the parade of organized crime figures who passed through Trump Tower — or in some cases, did business with the Trump Organization, and even Trump himself.

On June 12, results were announced for Puerto Rico’s latest status referendum — the fifth in 50 years. An overwhelming 97 percent voted in favor of statehood.
