The Trump administration is calling for the prompt reauthorization of a controversial part of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Section 702 permits eavesdropping on high-value targets, including those designated as suspected terrorists, cyber actors, and others. FISA has been extended again and again, and, despite repeated assurances of safeguards, numerous examples of excesses and potential violations of Americans’ privacy have come to light.

Cyberattacks are again generating headlines and global paranoia after Equifax, a major credit-reporting agency, announced the “hack heard around the world” earlier this month.

The July 29 mega-breach affected 143 million customers, from whom hackers obtained a trove of personal data including names, birth dates, Social Security and credit card numbers.

The dazzling spectacle of Monday’s Great American Eclipse — and the national paranoia about prolonged eye damage it inspired — overshadowed an epic milestone in US aerospace history.

The movement to unmoor Confederate monuments gained momentum in 2015, when self-proclaimed white supremacist Dylan Roof posed with a Confederate flag and murdered nine African Americans in a Charleston, SC, church. Activists and politicians worked together to take down the flag in the state and abolish other reminders of hate and bigotry in the South.

Israel is banning activists from occupied Palestine based on information obtained through a covert campaign.

On Monday, August 7, The Washington Post ran a story with the headline Judge orders CIA interrogation lawsuit to trial. It details the upcoming civil trial of two CIA-contract psychologists who were paid $81 million to design and implement the CIA program that became ubiquitously referred to as “enhanced interrogation.” The story itself was interesting and informative on a number of points.

The average American consumer probably has never heard of neodymium. But that substance — along with other so-called rare earth elements — is essential to the functioning of technologies we take for granted on a daily basis.

Rare-earths refer to 17 naturally occurring chemical elements on the periodic table. Despite the name, they aren’t particularly rare, existing in relative abundance in the earth’s crust. Cerium, an oxidizing agent, is as plentiful as copper, while radioactive promethium is the least common.

Republicans spent the first half of this year trying to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Their efforts were stymied in part by Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projections showing that all of their proposals would result in millions of additional Americans being uninsured and a sharp reduction in Medicaid funding.

On the campaign trail last year, Donald Trump announced ambitious plans to revive the struggling coal industry, bring back jobs for miners, and invest in clean coal programs.

To keep that promise, he has since rolled back Obama-era regulations on coal and withdrawn from the Paris climate agreement.

In response to environmental concerns, Trump has touted “clean coal” — a seemingly oxymoronic phrase — referring to the expensive technology that can capture harmful carbon emissions.

Republicans and Democrats found something they could agree on this week: Chris Wray, President Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI director. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously on Thursday to advance Wray’s confirmation to the full Senate.

Sweeping bipartisan approval is expected, although only 51 votes are needed to confirm his appointment. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has said he intends to hold the vote before senators leave for August recess.

Even though over half of states have legalized medical marijuana, it remains a Schedule I drug in the eyes of the the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Alongside heroin in the most restrictive classification available, marijuana is deemed to have “no currently acceptable medical use and high potential for abuse.”

Despite condemnation on a federal level, states continue to pass legislation making it available for both medical and recreational purposes.

Just this week, the attorneys general from 18 states and Washington D.C. sued Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for delaying borrower defense rules that were scheduled to take effect on July 1.

The key to understanding the Trump-Russia entanglements requires going back long before the 2016 presidential campaign, and looking at the parade of organized crime figures who passed through Trump Tower — or in some cases, did business with the Trump Organization, and even Trump himself.

Many of these shady figures stem from the countries of the former Soviet Union, have ties to the oligarchs and, through them, to the Kremlin itself. And there’s an FBI angle.

Celebrating the 4th of July is all about pride. Pride in being an American. Pride in the virtues America stands for. And one of these virtues is the ability to question authority — although its citizens don’t always do so (or look kindly at those who do), especially when they are consumed by fear.

On the heels of proposed budget cuts, the EPA announced plans to eliminate 1,200 employees — roughly 8 percent of the agency’s workforce — by next September.

In the era of Donald Trump and #TheResistance, questions of free speech have once again come to the forefront of public consciousness. On June 12, results were announced for Puerto Rico’s latest status referendum — the fifth in 50 years. An overwhelming 97 percent voted in favor of statehood. While such a landslide victory might suggest that most of the territory’s citizens are in agreement, that’s not the case. Only 23 percent of registered voters participated in Sunday’s plebiscite, down from 72 percent in 2012. Most voters boycotted the election.

This week the 52nd anniversary of Griswold v Connecticut, a landmark Supreme Court ruling in women’s reproductive rights, quietly came and went.

The 1965 decision legalized usage of contraceptives for married couples in the state of Connecticut, although the same freedom would not be extended to unmarried women until 1972. At the time of the ruling, 24 states still prohibited the sale of contraceptives.

Donald Trump is a self-proclaimed billionaire real estate mogul turned reality television star, who just happens to be the president of the United States. On Celebrity Apprentice, he did the hiring and firing. People believe that he is rich. Therefore, as he loved to repeat on the campaign trail, he was God’s gift for job creation. For all his chaffing against the GOP establishment, he is the living embodiment of the Republicans’ core mantra: the rich are the job creators; so don’t tax us. Unleashing the rich will be good for everyone. Trust us.

Since taking office, President Donald Trump has wasted no time in proposing rollbacks to Obama-era federal regulations. So, it should come as no surprise that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted last month to propose changes to current regulations on Internet service providers.

Spearheaded by Ajit Pai — the Trump-appointed FCC chairman and former lawyer for Verizon — the 2-1 vote is the first step in dismantling the Open Internet Order. The lone FCC Democrat, Mignon Clyburn, was overruled by Pai and fellow commissioner Michael O’Reilly.

“Black Wall Street” was a prospering African-American neighborhood In Tulsa, Oklahoma, that went up in flames 95 years ago. Incredibly, most Americans have never heard of the shameful events of June 1, 1921, when whites firebombed the neighborhood from the air and an estimated 300 African-Americans were murdered.

For decades, the city of Tulsa tried to erase this dark day from its memory and history books alike. It  nearly succeeded — because what happened seems almost impossible to believe.

Michael Flynn had what amounts to the shortest tenure of any national security adviser in US history. He had not held the position for even one full month before being forced to resign on Feb. 13, 2017, after it was revealed that he gave “incomplete information” on the extent of his contact with Sergei Kislyak, the Russian Ambassador to the United States.
