WNBA star Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia since mid-February after arriving at a Moscow airport reportedly with an oil derived from cannabis, which was treated as a violation of the country’s strict anti-drug laws, and could carry a maximum penalty of up to a decade in prison.

The US Embassy in Moscow has stepped up its pressure on the Russian government in the last days, demanding that Griner and a couple other Americans detained in Russia get the standard consular access.

Monday’s devastating crash of a Boeing 737 operated by China Eastern Airlines has gripped the US aviation industry (aka Boeing) in what’s shaping up to be another major scandal barely a year after the plane manufacturer had finally managed to move beyond the disastrous rollout of the 737 MAX 8, which left hundreds dead as a design flaw led to two crashes, one in Ethiopia and the other in Indonesia.

Apparently not content with diplomatic war on one front with Russia, the Biden administration appears ready to escalate with China following on the heels of last week’s persistent accusations that Beijing was mulling cooperation with Moscow on weapons resupplies for its Ukraine operation, as well as assistance on Western sanctions evasion.

Nigeria, the most populous country in OPEC, can produce up to 2.5 million barrels of oil per day, according to the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Greater escalation is in the air as two nuclear-armed superpowers continue stumbling toward a hugely alarming WWIII scenario as the Russian invasion of Ukraine reaches almost a full month. The Wall Street Journal on Monday has cited US defense officials who say Washington is covertly sending Soviet-made air defense equipment to Ukraine to help repel Russian air power. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that he’s “ready for negotiations” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but that if they break down, it will lead to World War III.

On Thursday, Lithuania’s parliament unanimously passed a resolution urging for a no-fly zone over Ukraine, joining its fellow Baltic state Estonia in calling for the action, which would require shooting down Russian planes and bombing anti-aircraft missiles inside Russia.

The Lithuanian resolution “urges the United Nations to take immediate action to secure a no-fly zone over Ukraine to stop mass civilian deaths.”

China has issued a full response to the US regarding recent allegations related to the Ukraine war in a new Washington Post op-ed. China’s ambassador to the US blasted as total “disinformation” the White House charge that Beijing is poised to answer positively Moscow’s request for military assistance in Ukraine. Jake Sullivan had warned the China delegation in Rome that severe “consequences” would follow any Moscow-Beijing cooperation regarding Ukraine.

Russia’s central bank announced that it will suspend purchases of gold from banks due to overwhelming demand from households, Reuters reports. The purchasing pause will take effect Tuesday with no end date set.

“Currently, households’ demand for buying physical gold in bars has increased, driven, in particular, by the abolition of value-added tax on these operations,” reads a statement from the central bank.

One of the core staples of the past 40 years, and an anchor propping up the dollar’s reserve status, was a global financial system based on the petrodollar – this was a world in which oil producers would sell their product to the US (and the rest of the world) for dollars, which they would then recycle the proceeds in dollar-denominated assets and while investing in dollar-denominated markets, explicitly prop up the USD as the world reserve currency, and in the process backstop the standing of the US as the world’s undisputed financial superpower.

US troops will stay in Poland despite Russia’s missile attack on western Ukraine’s Yavoriv military facility, which is about 15 miles from the border of Poland, a senior Pentagon official told Stars and Stripes on Monday. The US currently has about 8,750 troops in Poland, more than half of which were deployed in recent months as tensions escalated in the region.

Within the last hours there have been growing reports that Israeli government websites have been hit in a major cyberattack.
