While Democrats in Washington are unable to unite to expand voting rights, Republicans across the country continue to promote and pass state laws that restrict voters. More than 389 bills in 48 states aim to make voting harder. Georgia, Texas, and Florida may get the lion’s share of attention, but Republican lawmakers are hard at work enacting voter suppression laws in many states that fly under the national media radar, such as Kansas, Montana, and Arkansas.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has expanded the UK’s controversial COVID-19 lockdown by another four weeks Monday, citing concerns about the “Delta” COVID mutant that first emerged from India. The PM said the delay would allow British adults more time to get vaccinated.

“It’s sensible to wait just a little longer,” the PM said as he claimed that the government is concerned that the link between COVID and hospitalizations “hasn’t been severed.”

Little reason to get excited by a coalition that will almost certainly fall at first significant hurdle.

Pakistan is expected to spend more than a billion dollars in the next fiscal year to import COVID-19 vaccines to inoculate around 100 million people. The trouble is, anti-vaccine groups have sprung up around the country and have deterred some from taking the vaccine. In response, one local government in Pakistan has a new weapon in its war chest against vaccine hesitancy: disable the SIM cards of mobile phones of people who decline to get jabbed.

Since the pandemic hit over a year ago, it seems the world’s focus has been on developing and distributing vaccines. Outside of emergency rooms and intensive care units, treating the disease took a back seat. And when treatments were discussed, it was often by some of the more fringe elements of the healthcare community (or the nonmedical public). Who can forget former President Donald Trump’s suggestion to inject disinfectant into the body?

The UK’s National Health Service has received new guidelines from the government on how to record COVID-19 cases, separating people who are symptomatic from those who just test positive for SARS-CoV-2.

From the beginning of the pandemic, the NHS (and most countries in the world) have defined a “COVID-19 case” as anyone who tests positive for SARS-CoV-2, regardless of whether or not they are sick.

Less than a month after the killing of George Floyd, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo celebrated signing a police reform package into law. “You don’t need to protest, you won,” he said at the time. “You accomplished your goal. Society says you’re right, the police need systemic reform.” But a year later — as he faces a potential impeachment trial over multiple allegations of sexual harassment, among other things — Cuomo has succeeded in placing a career prosecutor on the state’s highest court, someone who critics say has led “an active resistance to an equitable criminal legal system.”
