Ever since the Great Recession of 2008, Wall Street’s name has been mud with the American public. One recent poll showed that 64 percent of those surveyed believe “the stock market is rigged against amateur investors in favor of large, professional investors.” No doubt the recent GameStop drama helped shape this view.

Millions of Americans are without power Wednesday morning as winter storms and freezing temperatures batter the country. At least 20 people are dead due to weather-related incidents. As for Texas, the state with the most power outages, millions are still without power heading into the fourth day.

Newton’s third law of motion says that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The American story of the struggle for racial equality seems subject to a similar law.

Just as America’s founding gave way to the Civil War, and reconstruction to Jim Crow and segregation, the civil rights struggle of the 1960s gave way to repressive incarceration and Richard Nixon, and the election of our first Black president was followed by Donald Trump.

If you are starting to feel like forces controlling the governments of the west are out to get you, then it is likely that you are either a paranoid nut job, or a stubborn realist.

Either way, it means that you have some major problems on your hands.
