We had only ten days to prepare.

Panic ensued.

Who was going go organize it?

A brilliant young man, Jamie Stern-Weiner, volunteered.

Then a dozen other souls joined in

But where was it going to be?  

A kind-hearted Palestinian offered his restaurant.

But how were we going to sell forty $150 tickets?

In the end we sold all of them.

We also look at the deadly dance of the regional powers, India and the People’s Republic of China, over Pakistan.

This week Bank of America warned in an SEC filing that there’s a serious concern that cryptocurrencies will hurt their business and that they need to adapt immediately.

Back in the 1990s when US financial institutions did not want to loan Donald Trump any more money, Deutsche Bank stepped up to the plate. Since then, the German bank has seemingly played a key role in Trump’s business empire/house of cards.

Deutsche Bank has also been involved with all kinds of shady people doing all kinds of shady things. Such as money laundering. In addition, several people in Trump’s orbit — for example, son-in-law and White House senior adviser Jared Kushner — have had their own dealings with Deutsche Bank.

Over Half of US Gun Owners Do Not Store Their Guns Safely (Milicent)

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Survey: 54 percent of gun owners do not lock up their guns or even use trigger locks — and children under the age of 18 were in 34 percent of their homes. The study’s lead author, Cassandra Crifasi, said “Household gun ownership can increase the risk of homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings… The survey findings indicate a real public health emergency.”

Right now, the U.S. government is operating in the negative on every front: it’s spending far more than what it makes (and takes from the American taxpayers) and it is borrowing heavily (from foreign governments and Social Security)  to keep the government operating and keep funding its endless wars abroad. This is how military empires fall and fail: by spreading themselves too thin and spending themselves to death. It happened in Rome. It’s happening again.

Democrats performed well in state and local elections in 2017 and held a large lead in generic polls heading into this year. But voters expecting a Democratic wave that wins them the House in 2018 may be in for a surprise.

Winning the majority of votes in a state, or in the country as a whole, doesn’t guarantee victory. In 2016, Democrats lost the popular vote for all congressional races in Pennsylvania by a margin of only eight percentage points but ended up with less than a third of the state’s seats (5 of 18).

The US government is currently holding about 400,000 men and women in a patchwork of immigration prisons. Some are kept in corporate facilities that are guaranteed a minimum number of prisoners daily; others are in cells leased from county jails and other lockups.

In the seventieth edition of the Russian Newspapers Monitor, Professor Filip Kovacevic discusses the articles from four Russian newspapers: Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Izvestia, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, and Moskovskiy Komsomolets. He discusses the catastrophic political crisis in Ukraine and the possibility of the collapse of the present government structures brought about by severe infighting among various oligarchic clans. In addition, he focuses on the recent changes in the Russian military, including the increase of the numbers of troops and weapons and the likely ban on the use of smart phones.

Not all heroes wear capes. Among the ones who don’t is Nathaniel Persily, a man few Americans have ever heard of. By day, he teaches at Stanford Law School. At night, he is saving the battered US democracy.

The latest school shooting tragedy in Parkland, FL, has left the nation wondering once again why Congress can’t come to any agreement about how to prevent these horrible events.

Will this time be different? Maybe. Because a tenuous, bipartisan consensus has emerged — regarding the sale of bump stocks.

So what exactly is a bump stock? Simple. It’s a (legal) augmentation to a rifle that makes it functionally equivalent to a fully automatic machine gun.

Jerrold Nadler of New York, is “the equivalent (of) Pearl Harbor.” He told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes the Russians “are destroying our democratic process.”

The second longest bull market in stocks was brutally interrupted in early February 2018 with some serious volatility, including the largest single day point drop in the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.  I mean, why would something like that happen if the economy is otherwise doing so well, investors are so clearly exuberant, unemployment is so very, very low, and the Fed, Treasury and President Trump are guiding things along so firmly?  Tongue firmly in cheek…
