Denis spent his last day of military leave celebrating Christmas with friends in Kyiv.

Two weeks after returning from positions near Bakhmut, the site of the most brutal fighting in Russia’s war against Ukraine, the 18-year-old private first class and his friend Dmytro still find it difficult adjusting to civilian life.

“For me, it’s tough to be in society with civilians and to socialize with them,” said 20-year-old Dmytro, who is also a private first class in the Ukrainian military.

This summer, WhoWhatWhy once again ran its popular Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP). Five college students and recent graduates, some of whom were completely new to journalism, spent three months learning the craft and honing their skills.

A correspondent recently wrote me that, whereas it used to be that a typical teacher in his district had 20 years teaching experience, now it’s down to four years’ experience.  (He himself just left the teaching profession after a brief stint.)  I asked him what accounts for the quick exodus from teaching.  Here’s what he responded.

The root cause is economics without question. I can summarize the largest factors, but it will hardly capture the entire problem.

“You break it, you buy it.” This is a rule most Americans who have ever purchased anything in a store are familiar with. But when it comes to his acquisition of Twitter, Elon Musk, true to his image as a “disruptor,” has turned that rule on its head. His mantra seems to be, “You buy it, you break it.”

He certainly seems to be well on his way to screwing up the popular social media platform. And that is his right, according to the rule in America that matters above all: the rule of money.

Sue Eshelman died from COVID-19 two years ago during her stay at a Pennsylvania nursing home for rehabilitation of a broken ankle. She was supposed to be home for Thanksgiving; instead, her husband is counting all the missed holidays.
