Legally owning a gun in America could get you killed by a government agent. While it still technically remains legal to own a firearm in America, possessing one can now get you pulled over, searched, arrested, subjected to all sorts of surveillance, treated as a suspect without ever having committed a crime, shot at and killed. This same rule does not apply to government agents, however, who are armed to the hilt and rarely given more than a slap on the wrists for using their weapons to shoot and kill American citizens.

If you’ve been paying attention to the Russia story, even if not to every twist and turn, you’ve heard or learned about something call the Magnitsky Act.

This piece of legislation, which imposed deep sanctions on Russia, is named after a Russian lawyer by the name of Sergei Magnitsky. Before his death in a Russian jail, his client, and patron, was an American financier named Bill Browder.

Exuberant cheerleaders like Ray Kurzweil are quite confident we are approaching a moment when a computer will exhibit all the power of the human brain.

The definition of “power” in this context is fuzzy. But Kurzweil and others are sure we’re about to uncover the “algorithm” that underlies all brain activity.

These days, if you want to raise the hackles of public interest advocates in Washington, D.C., bring up the Regulatory Accountability Act (RAA).

The RAA, now pending before Congress, evokes a torrent of metaphors.

“If [White House Senior Adviser] Steven Bannon and [Americans for Tax Reform President] Grover Norquist ever had a love child,” the RAA would be the result, quipped Laura MacCleery in a recent blog.

Recently I was in Belfast, Ireland covering “The Twelfth Orange Celebrations,” where a lot of people got drunk and set a bunch of bonfires, not a big surprise there. Luckily there were no major conflicts, and everything remained peaceful.

One: Secretly create the system.

Two: Once it’s up and running and established, act as if you’re a mere participant in the system.

Three: Claim that the system is absolutely necessary, and without it, things would collapse.

There is at least one truth in politics: Politicians lie. They misrepresent, twist and spin facts. They try to get away with hiding or obfuscating the truth. When they are caught in a real whopper, however, they usually pay a price — not just at the polls but also because their legacy is tarnished.

Just think back to the most famous quotes and moments of some recent presidents.

Luke reports live from the streets of Paris, France where it is currently Bastille Day or French Independence Day. Trump has recently arrived in Paris and is meeting with Macron.

There are several different protest groups here, many of which are protesting Trump who has a 14% approval rating in Europe. The police are out in force as well, with full riot gear.

Today is the French national holiday also known as Bastille Day.

I first heard of Bastille Day as a teenager when I heard the song of the same name by the Canadian prog-rock band Rush. Here’s some sample lyrics:
