Sterling Hayden's life encompassed many important events and periods of the 20th century. A lifelong seaman he joined the Marine Corps and the OSS during World War 2, running smuggling operations to support anti-fascist partisans in Yugoslavia. He was also a movie star, famously appearing in The Godfather and in two Stanley Kubrick films - The Killing and Dr Strangelove.

Sterling Hayden is perhaps best-known for playing Jack D Ripper but his life and career make for fascinating reading. After a time working as a mate on various ships his near 2-metre frame, grizelled good looks and shock of blonde hair saw him move into print modelling and then into Hollywood. Hayden then joined the Marine Corps and from there the Office of the Co-ordinator of Information, which became the OSS.

Spies is the 'new' game show from Channel 4. I say 'new' because it's a blow-for-blow remake of the 2004 BBC series Spy, which also took a small group of members of the public and had three former spooks put them through their paces via a series of tests and training exercises.

Unreal is a gripping and brutal satire of reality TV but it is much more than that. While this might sound like a drama about a trivial subject, the content of Unreal makes it one of the most serious and important TV series of recent years. It follows two female producers as they make a romance-themed reality show, highlighting the degree to which they're willing to manipulate the contestants in order to produce 'good TV'.

In this month's podcast for patreon subscribers I review Rogue One: A Star Wars Cash-In. The film is a spy movie/war movie about the rebellion stealing the plans for the Death Star and has a much darker tone and grittier visuals than most Star Wars films.

Pearse invited me on his radio show to discuss the 1964 TV movie A Carol for Another Christmas. This was the first in a series of TV films designed to promote the United Nations and sponsored by the Xerox corporation.

United 93 was the first and - to date - the only major movie to depict what happened in the skies over the US on the morning of the 9/11 attacks. The film-makers intended it to be as accurate and realistic as possible, so they reached out to the Pentagon and the US Air Force in particular for assistance.

Members of Congress have now been secretly briefed by the CIA on “the Russian affair,” and media, led by the Washington Post, are running with the story that Russia influenced the US election on the side of Trump.

However, this probably wouldn't have been possible without the help of the Pentagon. Sometimes the Freedom of Information Act is a strange beast and you receive something you didn't ask for, but are still happy to get. That happened to me recently when in response to a request about the Pentagon's Hollywood database I received an updated list of DOD Films - movies that were assisted by the DOD.

The first two Iron Man movies are far more important to cinematic history than their daft scripts, super-arrogant star performer and cartoonish presentation might suggest. Between them they made over $1.2 billion worldwide and established the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has since become the biggest film franchise of all time.

Charlie Wilson's War reduces nearly 10 years of the Soviet-Afghan War into an hour and forty minutes of Sorkin-scribed witty dialogue focusing almost entirely on how one alcoholic, womanising congressman helped to raise the billions of dollars that were given to the mujahideen to fight the godless Commie invaders.

In November 1959 CIA Director Allen Dulles sent a copy of the new Ian Fleming novel Goldfinger to Jackie Kennedy. In October 1964 the CIA Deputy Director Marshall Carter was invited to a special screening of the new James Bond movie Goldfinger at the MPAA headquarters in Washington.

Tomorrow Never Dies is perhaps the most military-heavy Bond film of recent times, benefiting from production support from both the British and American armed forces. Despite this the Pentagon's Hollywood liaison Phil Strub denied that they provided any assistance to the film-makers.

The elephant in the room: HOW LONG HAS THE FBI KNOWN that new Hillary emails require reopening the probe in her handling of classified materials?

The Department of Energy has a minor but interesting role in the history of Hollywood, providing shooting locations for Tron (1982) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. I am still awaiting documents on Star Trek but the DoE have provided me with another of their records on Tron - a kind of in house making of video.

Le Psoe est-il en état de mort clinique? La réunion de samedi dernier du Comité Fédéral (instance délibérative du parti) a sanctionné la gestion politique de Pedro Sánchez, qui,  tirant les conséquences, de ce vote, a remis sa démission. Un organe de gestion provisoire  composé de dix membres a été immédiatement mis en place pour préparer les nouvelles échéances dont la plus importante sera d’infirmer les votes antérieurs de cet organe dirigeant pour se prononcer en faveur d’une abstention pour une éventuelle nouvelle candidature du PP à l’investiture parlementaire.

Rien ne va plus au sein du Psoe. Les deux mauvais résultats aux élections régionales en Galice et au Pays basque comme les résultats médiocres aux élections législatives ont plongé  ce parti dans une crise interne sans précédent. Elle n’est pas sans rappeler celle qui secoua les communistes espagnols au début des années 80, toutes proportions gardées et toutes choses égales par ailleurs.

J’ai relevé le titre suivant dans sur la page Syrie de la chaîne d’info continue internationale France 24 : « À l’ONU, Paris dénonce des « crimes de guerre »[1] et compare Alep à Guernica ». Le sous-texte résume un élément du discours de l’ambassadeur de France à l’ONU, François Delattre :

A l’occasion de la célébration de la Diada, fête nationale catalane, le 11 septembre dernier, le Président de la Généralité de Catalogne, Carles Puigdemont a évoqué la possibilité de convoquer, après celui de septembre 2015, un deuxième référendum pour l’indépendance à l’horizon 2017. Il s’agirait de proposer une nouvelle feuille de route vers l’indépendance qui passerait par ce référendum puis, si l’accord ne se fait pas sur sa légitimité, par des élections constituantes dans un an.

Le Psoe va mal très mal. Les dissidents se considèrent comme victimes du manque de liberté d’expression et de démocratie à l’intérieur du parti. L’image est déplorable, bien sûr, mais elle est le reflet du danger d’implosion qui guette ce parti, confortablement installé depuis une quarantaine d’années dans le dense tissu de ce que Podemos appelle, concept sans grande pertinence mais qui reflète assez bien l’état des choses ressenti, « la casta ».

Il faudra attendre que les élections régionales de Galice et du Pays basque aient livré leur verdict pour qu’une autre solution, peu vraisemblable aujourd’hui, que de nouvelles élections en décembre soit possible pour former un nouveau gouvernement.

Si l’on examine les sondages réalisés dans ces deux régions, on note que dans la première le PP est en position hégémonique, alors que dans la deuxième, des alliances seront nécessaires au PNV (parti nationaliste basque de centre droit) pour gouverner.

Tron is a classic piece of transhumanist cinema and the first of a string of films where someone is sucked into a digital realm and has to battle it out with computer programs in order to save the day (the Matrix trilogy being the most popular examples).

I was recently a guest on Uncle the Podcast - my favourite up and coming comedy podcast - to discuss the 1980s arm wrestling movie Over the Top, starring Sylvester Stallone. The film is about a father who is estranged from his young son but due to the mother's illness they are thrown back together.

Adding to the British government departments who have provided assistance to the James Bond franchise, the now defunct Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have released documents on the filming of a scene for Skyfall at their headquarters in Whitehall.

There are very few investigators on the planet who are interested in this subject. I am one of them. There is a reason why.

Today we take a look at the documentary series A Very Heavy Agenda by Robbie Martin, which I reviewed a few weeks ago.

The Battle of Algiers was a groundbreaking film when it came out in 1966, not just for its depiction of the Algerian War against French occupation but for its quasi-documentary realism and its morally neutral approach, showing both sides committing atrocities.

Richard Klein is one of the most important people in the entertainment industry that you have never heard of - a former State Department employee who now works for McLarty Associates - an elite Washington DC law firm - as their liaison to Hollywood.

Rounding off this second season we take a look at SALT, the 2010 action thriller starring Angelina Jolie as a CIA officer accused of being a Russian sleeper agent. SALT is one of the less well known CIA-assisted productions, but along with technical advice from former CIA officer Melissa Boyle Mahle the producers also consulted with the CIA themselves in a video conference.

Robbie Martin is our final guest for this season as we dissect the 2012 docudrama Zero Dark Thirty. We discussed the difficulty in defining what kind of film this is - somewhere between a spy thriller, a documentary and a dry European art house movie.

NASA's Multimedia Liaison Office was founded in the 1990s but they have recently become more aggressively involved in the entertainment industry.

It’s unthinkable—but not surprising—that the FBI didn’t record their interview with Hillary Clinton.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) recently published its annual report, which details complaints against various movies including Spectre, Kingsman and Minions. As is so often the case, sex and violence were the focus of the complaints, leading the BBFC to explain why they had allowed these scenes into films aimed at young people.

Pearse and I recently appeared on The Opperman Report to chat about The Writer with No Hands, Matthew Alford's book into the disappearance and probable murder of Hollywood screenwriter Gary Devore.

Adam from Themes and Memes is our guest to talk about the 2015 action comedy American Ultra. We start by trying to define this film, which is an intense mixture of cartoonish ultra violence, CIA covert operations, romance, comedy and horror, looking at the dissociating nature of this blend.

Our old friends at the U.S. Pentagon’s Tor Project have had a hard time of it recently. The public face of Tor, Jacob Appelbaum, was forced to resign from the project when it was revealed he apparently is a sexual predator.

One of the most prominent influences of pop culture on government and on the deep state is in the use of code names. From the capture of Saddam Hussein to a counter-smuggling helicopter unit in Hawaii, from a mass surveillance program named after Blazing Saddles to Secret Service and MI5 code names taken from cartoon characters, this is a widespread and frequent phenomenon.
