Russia’s central bank announced that it will suspend purchases of gold from banks due to overwhelming demand from households, Reuters reports. The purchasing pause will take effect Tuesday with no end date set.

“Currently, households’ demand for buying physical gold in bars has increased, driven, in particular, by the abolition of value-added tax on these operations,” reads a statement from the central bank.

One of the core staples of the past 40 years, and an anchor propping up the dollar’s reserve status, was a global financial system based on the petrodollar – this was a world in which oil producers would sell their product to the US (and the rest of the world) for dollars, which they would then recycle the proceeds in dollar-denominated assets and while investing in dollar-denominated markets, explicitly prop up the USD as the world reserve currency, and in the process backstop the standing of the US as the world’s undisputed financial superpower.

Those days are coming to an end.

A leaked March 3 memo revealed this week that the Kremlin instructed Russian media outlets to “use as much as possible fragments of broadcasts of the popular Fox News host Tucker Carlson.” Carlson is the only Western “journalist” mentioned by name.

US troops will stay in Poland despite Russia’s missile attack on western Ukraine’s Yavoriv military facility, which is about 15 miles from the border of Poland, a senior Pentagon official told Stars and Stripes on Monday. The US currently has about 8,750 troops in Poland, more than half of which were deployed in recent months as tensions escalated in the region.

Within the last hours there have been growing reports that Israeli government websites have been hit in a major cyberattack.

Multiple regional correspondents are reporting that Israel has declared a “national state of cyber emergency” given it’s already being called the “largest-ever” cyber attack carried out against Israel’s infrastructure.

Days after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed an emergency session of the UN General Assembly. He said at the time that the thought of a nuclear is “simply inconceivable” – but warned world powers they must do everything possible in terms of diplomacy from reaching a nuclear showdown scenario.

Update(11:56ET): The White House is considering Russia’s Sunday attack on Ukraine’s base at Yavoriv, which lies a mere 10 to 15 miles from NATO member Poland’s border, a dangerous escalation aimed at the West, also given that only until last month US National Guardsmen were present there reportedly training Ukrainian troops.

It’s been less than three weeks since Russia invaded Ukraine, and things couldn’t be going better… well, unless you are one of the 44 million Ukrainians whose country is getting shelled. But let’s forget them for a moment (as the world will in a few weeks).

On the face of it, Russia’s performance justifies the giddiness of military experts (both real and on Twitter).

Setting the stage for a potential major escalation with Western and NATO powers, the Kremlin warned on Saturday that the Russian military is prepared to target Western arms shipments that are continuing to pour into Ukraine. Russia’s Deputy FM Sergei Ryabkov said on state TV that Washington had been informed in the last days that Moscow will see weapons supply convoys entering Ukraine as “legitimate targets”.

Update (2130ET): Initial reports that missiles ‘struck’ the US Embassy in Erbil, Iraq have been downgraded.

Ukraine government officials are sounding the alarm alleging that Belarus is preparing its own military operation for a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in support of Russia. So far Belarus has only participated in the offensive by allowing Russia to attack from its territory, beginning when the operation kicked off on February 24.

A drone crash in Croatia which is believed to have come from the nearby war in Ukraine is being described as “a serious incident” by the Balkan country’s president Zoran Milanovic. The Soviet-era Tu-141 “Strizh” reconnaissance drone, likely operated by Ukraine’s military (given as the Associated Press noted that it’s the only known country currently operating Tu-141 drones) crashed just outside the capital city of Zagreb on Thursday.

During his relatively brief Friday speech on the Russia-Ukraine war, President Biden called for an end to normal trade relations with Russia, clearing the way for increased import tariffs, and announced a ban on Russian-made vodka and caviar, as we detailed earlier.

In a possible message and warning to NATO, Russia’s air force is now attacking locations in the far west of Ukraine—some of them for the first time since the invasion began on February 24.
