For those of us waiting since passage of the JFK Act of 1992 for release of the last withheld documents on President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the news last Thursday was beyond anti-climactic. It was infuriating — and illegal.

Given that President Donald Trump seized the opportunity to be in Dallas for a GOP fundraiser, it was also an insult to the memory of Kennedy’s assassination in the same city almost 54 years before.

Halloween, and the accompanying costumes, are supposed to be scary or funny. But what do you do at a time when many Americans are already scared about what is happening to their country and the entire world is making fun of the US?

Here are some examples of people who used Halloween to send a message or simply to ridicule all of the people who got the country into this mess.

Despite the fact that we are 17,600 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist attack; 11,000 times more likely to die from an airplane accident than from a terrorist plot involving an airplane; 1,048 times more likely to die from a car accident than a terrorist attack, and 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist, we have handed over control of our lives to government officials who treat us as a means to an end—the source of money and power. We have allowed ourselves to become fearful, controlled, pacified zombies.

A National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) official has told WhoWhatWhy that approximately 2,800 JFK assassination records remain withheld in full following Thursday’s disappointing release. Here is an up-to-the-minute count of the documents that NARA has not yet made public:

Withheld in Full — there remain approximately 2,745 documents withheld in full; of these 547 were withheld in full for tax or grand jury information that is not currently subject to release.

In the fifty-third edition of the Russian Newspapers Monitor, Professor Filip Kovacevic discusses the articles from four Russian newspapers: Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Izvestia, Moskovskiy Komsomolets, and Komsomolskaya Pravda. He analyzes a speech made by the Russian president Vladimir Putin at the annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi. In addition, he discusses the Russian space program and the likelihood that the Russian government will finance an expedition to the Moon.

Originally, this quote from 20th-century Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw meant that one shouldn’t wrestle against a pig. Nowadays, it could be interpreted to mean that if you are fighting on the side of Donald Trump, you will inevitably be dragged in the mud.

One: Russia had strong blackmail material on Trump and could thus control him;

Two: Most damning in that material, Trump used prostitutes while he was in Russia, and paid several of them to urinate on a hotel bed Obama had once slept in;

Author and journalist David Talbot has spent years examining and writing about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and its connection to broader US politics. In his conversation with WhoWhatWhy’s Jeff Schechtman, he makes the case that the cynicism from decades of lies about JFK, Martin Luther King, Watergate, and many more seminal events in recent US history is to blame in part for the divisions and the distrust of government we are witnessing today.
