As recently as 2008, a professor of Jurisprudence at King’s College London, Timothy Macklem, described the phrase in this fashion:

One cannot view in isolation President Donald Trump’s decision about US troop levels in Afghanistan. Because this is bigger than Trump — or any president.

Just when US-backed and Kurdish-led forces have encircled the Syrian capital of ISIS, Raqqa, a threatened Turkish invasion could undermine the war against the terror group. Even without meddling from the country that hosts NATO’s second-largest army, the United States is facing formidable odds in trying to pacify areas liberated from ISIS. Turkey’s new incursion, directed against the Kurds, could turn Syria into another Middle Eastern quagmire for the US.

Following the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA last week, Republican and Democratic politicians alike were quick to condemn what they saw. Almost to a man — that man being President Donald Trump — they stressed that the ideology on display was inconsistent with American values and the principles the United States was founded on.

That sounds nice. But it is, of course, mostly false — and that’s part of the problem. While it is true that the United States is founded on admirable ideals, the implementation of these lofty goals has been a work in progress since Day One.

One headline today read, “Republicans in Despair After Trump’s Disastrous Week.”

It brought to mind heated conversations I had years ago with Republican aides on The Hill, folks I have known from when I reported on such things back in the 80s and 90s.

Those conversations were sparked by the first signs of trouble: the Tea Party insurgents. I warned those GOP operatives: “Clean your party’s skirts of these nuts or they will overwhelm you and take over your party.”

The Justice Department is often zealous, sometimes to the point of recklessness, in prosecuting street crime and drug offenses. But it has been dilatory and feckless — our podcast guest this week calls it “chickenshit” — in prosecuting white collar criminals, many of whom helped to bring down the US economy in 2008.

Once, not that long ago, the government prosecuted the likes of Michael Milken and executives of Enron, Adelphia and Worldcom. It may have been the golden age of white collar prosecution.
