By the time I began going to Nabi Saleh, I had spent about four years reporting on what I saw in the West Bank and Gaza, watching detachedly as my politics moved ever leftward. What I witnessed in that small West Bank village was the last straw.

As we humans are so busy abusing each other, the constant din of battle seems to drown out an even bigger one: over the survival of life on this planet.

DeLonge, a famous musician (Blink-182, Angels and Airwaves) has surrounded himself with high-level spooks from the CIA and the military, in his new venture, To the Stars Academy.

It has been nearly five years since two bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, and nearly three years since the conclusion of the trial of the sole surviving Tsarnaev brother, Dzhokhar. And yet, the government continues to maintain radio silence over many crucial questions related to the bombing.

The internet, social media, even the so-called Dark Web are a sprawling Panopticon, a prison without cells and bars where we are watched 24-7 by the national security state and its corporate partners. The NSA and the intelligence community were deeply involved in the creation of the internet and later social media and the Google search engine. By the mid-1990s, the supercomputing community had migrated from universities to Silicon Valley and along with them the NSA and the CIA.

At the end of the year, we want to highlight some of the many stories WhoWhatWhy published this year. Some of them didn’t get the attention we thought they deserved while others showed that we were once again ahead of the curve on many issues.

What they all have in common is that they show the wide range of topics we cover.

The uproar over the ban of a list of words that has roiled the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and now the rest of the country, is understandable. The list, which a Health and Human Services official advised be omitted from the CDC’s budget documents, would make any scientist weep.

How could a mass murderer be banal, which my American Heritage Collegiate Dictionary defines as “drearily commonplace” and “trite”?
